test page with map

People on the floor, exercising and stretchingThe first paragraph needs to be grounded and should be made bold. This paragraph defines the reason for the page and confirms to the user that they are where they need to be. They don't want to waste their time, so help them out by visually showing them. The image above should also represent what the page is about, as visual clues can be understood quicker than reading content.

How to lay out the content

Now you divide the content into sections with headers. The title of the first section should be made into "Head 2" so that a screen reader (used by people with a visual impairment, or possibly those with trouble reading) can jump from section to section to speed their way through the text to get to where they need to be.

What is a screen reader?

This second section should have a header in "Head 3". It will be slightly smaller than "Head 2" to denote that it's a little less important than the previous paragraph.

Below is an embedded video of a man using a screen reader.

We also want to make content (text) visually appealing, so add block quotes (like this below) to make it stand out.

Marie Curie remains the only person to earn Nobel prizes in two different sciences.

You can add bullet points

  • If you have key points of info
  • They're fairly short
  • To draw attention to important information
  • So a reader can identify the key issues

Numbered bullet points are only for information where there is a sequence of events

  1. Get up
  2. Have a shower and get dressed
  3. Brush teeth and comb hair
  4. Eat breakfast
  5. Leave the house
  6. Catch the bus

You'll need to add links to different pages on your site and elsewhere.

A button link would look like this:  Go to the Home Page

A link in the text would look like this: home page

A link to another site (that takes you away from St. Leonards) should open in a new tab BBC Website

Whatever words you use on the link need to describe what the link is for (as seen above), so you should NEVER write 'click here'. You need to think about short words or phrases that are a CTA (Call To Action)

Images can be used as links too. If you want to know about the weather in Bootle, click on the image below:

Accordions can be used for FAQs

What is Lorem Ipsum?

Why do we use it?
